A’Studio /

A’Studio (А’Студио) is a Kazakh-Russian pop group who has also gained popularity in Europe and the United States. Founded in 1987 by Kazakh musician Baigali Serkebaev (Байгали Серкебаев), A’Studio today is an ensemble of three musicians—Serkebaev, Vladimir Mikloshich (Владимир Миклошич), and Katie Topuria (Кети Топурия)—with the participation of drummer Yevgeniy Dalskiy (Евгений Дальский).

In 1989, A’Studio’s popular single “Julia” (“Джулия”) drew the attention of classic Russian pop singer Alla Pugachova (Алла Пугачёва), who invited the band to come play at her annual Christmas concert. She introduced the group as “the best band in the country,” which immediately brought them popularity all across the Soviet Union.

Throughout the 1990s A’Studio enjoyed a lot of success in Russia and in the former Soviet republics. During this time they released several full-length albums, including Julia (Джулия, 1990), a 1993 self-titled album, Soldier of Love (Солдат любви, 1994), Unloved (Нелюбимая, 1996) and Sinful Passion (Грешная страсть, 1998).

In 2000 A’Studio’s original vocalist, Batyrkhan Shukenov (Батырхан Шукенов), left the band to pursue solo projects and was replaced briefly by Polina Griffith (Полина Гриффис). With Griffith on vocals, the band released several popular singles, including “S.O.S.,” which made it onto the UK Singles Chart.

Griffith left the band in 2004 and was replaced by A’Studio’s current singer, Katie Topuria, originally from Tbilisi, Georgia. With this lineup, A’Studio released some of its most popular material, including “I Fly Away” (“Улетаю”), “You” (“Ты”), and “Night-Friend” (“Ночь-Подруга”), which brought a new wave of popularity around Russia and the former Soviet Union.

This wave of fame, however, was complicated by the death in a car accident of guitarist Baglan Sadvakasov (Баглан Садавасков). He was replaced briefly by Tamerlan Sadvakasov (Тамерлан Садвакасов), before the arrival of A’Studio’s most recent guitarist, Fyodor Dosumov.

A’Studio’s most recent single was the 2010 “Fashion Girl,” off the album Waves (Волны), which saw modest success. The band released a music video for this track, which reached 23rd on Russian charts.

Here is one of A’Studio’s most popular singles, “I Fly Away” (“Улетаю”):

Lyrics for “Улетаю”:

Here is another hit, “Night-Friend” (“Ночь-Подруга”):

Lyrics for “Ночь-Подруга”:
