Dantes and Oleynik

Dantes and Oleynik /

Published: October 31, 2016

Dantes and Oleynik (Дантес и Олейник) were a Ukrainian dance-pop duo; they met in 2008 while competing on a reality TV/music competition in Ukraine called Star Factory 2 (Фабрика Звёзд–2). They quickly became friends on set and continued to collaborate beyond their television experience. In 2010, they recorded their one and only studio album, I’m Already Twenty (Мне Уже 20), under their new moniker, Dio Filmy (ДиО. The duo split in 2015.

Their first major performance, in 2008, was through Star Factory, at the Ukrainian Palace of Arts at a concert set up as a recital. The contestants performed their music in front of the popular Ukrainian singer, actress, and producer Natalia Mogilevska (Наталія Могилевська). The following year the contestants, along with Mogilevska, went on a tour around Ukraine. After the duo won the competition in late 2009, Mogilevska proceeded to produce their first album.

The album, Мне Уже 20, was received favorably, in 2010 winning the duo a nomination for Best Ukrainian Artist at the MTV Europe Music Awards. Over the next four years, the duo released a collection of music videos for many of the songs on their album. Dio Filmy’s song “Girl Olya” (“Девочка Оля”) was also a top-20 Ukrainian radio hit, and a staple on the airwaves in 2011. 2011 also saw them performing at the Cannes Film Festival, Russian Night, and the Crimean Music Festival. They returned to the Crimean Music Festival the following year, when they debuted a new song, “Slow Ballad” (“Медляк”).

Dantes and Oleynik have also used their platform as Ukrainian pop stars to speak out against domestic violence. In 2011, they joined the Stay Human campaign, a joint informational effort between the European Union and Ukraine designed to educate about and raise awareness of domestic violence directed at women and children.

The lyrics for “Мне Уже 20”:

The video for the band’s single “Girl Olya” (“Девочка Оля”):

Lyrics for “Девочка Оля”:
