KSU

KSU is a seminal Polish punk rock band, originally formed in 1978 in the city of Ustrzyki Dolne. (The name KSU comes from the city code on license plates from the Ustrzyki Dolne area.) The group has been going strong for more than thirty years, with eleven official albums and a slew of pirated and bootlegged materials, especially from live shows. KSU started as a  more or less straightforward punk rock band, but over the three decades of their existence the band’s style has progressed into a slightly more mainstream rock sound.

KSU was originally founded in the late 1970s by four teenage boys: Bogdan “Bohun” Augustine, Eugene “Siczkę” Olejarczyk, Wojciech “Avian” Bodurkiewicza, and Miroslaw Wesołkina. Initially the group mostly played covers of then-popular rock and metal bands like Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, and Led Zeppelin. Within the first few years of their existence, KSU began to take cues from the major punk bands of the day, like the Sex Pistols and The Damned.

KSU’s biggest popularity came in the 1980s. In 1980 the band played the national New Wave festival in Kolobrzeg, to great success. From this time on KSU toured extensively, although this was cut short in 1983, when several members of the band were drafted into compulsory military service. Siczka, the singer, was drafted into the First Warsaw Tank Regiment, which eventually served as the inspiration for several of KSU’s more popular songs, including “1944,” “On the Other Side of the Door” (“Po drugiej stronie drzwi”), “Sentenced to 716 Days” (“Skazany na 716 dni”), and “Dead tree” (“Umarłe drzewa”). In May 1988, after the members had completed their military service, KSU was invited by studio owner Andrew Wiśniowski to finally record the band’s debut studio album, Under the Current (Pod prąd).

The 1990s saw a decline in KSU’s popularity, spurred not least by several tendentious lineup changes and poor management practices by the band’s manager, Krzysztof Rożej. KSU found themselves in a great deal of debt and dealing with a lot of internal tension. The group stayed active throughout this decade, but didn’t find their old energy again until 1999, when they released People Without Faces (Ludzie bez twarzy).

The early 2000s saw a few more minor releases, as well as a live DVD composed of footage from KSU’s performance at Woodstock. In 2008 KSU celebrated their 30th anniversary as a band, releasing the album XXX, which contained new versions of older tracks. KSU continues to be active today, though they have not again reached the same kind of popularity that they had in the 1980s.

Here is “In the Fog” (“Za mgłą”):

Lyrics for “Za mgłą”:

Dosyć często rozważam
Co jest warte me życie
Setka zgranych kawałków
Miraż bycia na szczycie
W takich chwilach najczęściej
Ruszam gdzieś w Połoniny
Tam zmęczony wspinaczką
Człowiek staje się inny

Ref. Tam na dole zostało
Wszystko to co cię męczy
Patrząc z góry wokoło
Świat wydaje się lepszy

Tam na dole zostało wszystko
Wszystko to co cię męczy
Patrząc z góry wokoło
Świat wydaje się lepszy

Uczesane przez wiatry
Gołe szczyty Połonin
Proszą byś po nich poszedł
Biesom, Czadom się skłonił
Z twarzą mokrą od deszczu
Przeziębnięty, zmęczony
Od złych rzeczy na dole
Jesteś mgłą oddzielony

Here is “People Without Faces” (“Ludzie bez twarzy”):

Lyrics for “Ludzie bez twarzy”:

Wypluci z gardeł czasu
Wymięci jak banknoty
Snują się po ulicach
Ludzie bez twarzy
Ich przygarbione plecy
Gotowe do ukłonów
Przygięte od dzieciństwa
Ludzie bez twarzy

Na ich twarzach smutek
Ich życie puste jest
Bez końca powielają
Z szablonu kolejny dzień

To życie ich przygniata
Ciężarem monotonii
A starość jego kresem
Ludzie bez twarzy
I czasem iskra gniewu
W oczach zmęczonych
Przypomni, że istnieją
Ludzie bez twarzy

Na ich twarzach smutek
Ich życie puste jest
Bez końca powielają
Z szablonu kolejny dzień

Na ich twarzach smutek
Ich życie puste jest
Bez końca powielają
Z szablonu kolejny dzień
Na ich twarzach smutek
Ich życie puste jest
Bez końca powielają
Z szablonu kolejny dzień

Ich życie puste jest
Z szablonu kolejny dzień
Ich życie puste jest
Z szablonu kolejny dzień
