Piotr Bukartyk is a Polish singer, composer, and artist. His personal style and artistic legacy can be compared to figures such as Mirosław Czyżykiewicz and Marek Grechuta.

Bukartyk was born in Zielona Góra and grew up in Gorzów Wielkopolski, a small city in northwestern Poland. He started singing and writing music in high school and participated in the Let’s Sing Poetry festival and the Student Song Festival in Krakow in the 1980s. He was successful at both and won awards at several song and cabaret festivals over the next few years. His musical career started officially with his solo career, in which he sang and played the acoustic guitar. He toured Poland extensively, playing his original compositions. However, he only released his first album, Champagne Verses (Szampańskie wersety), in 1997. This album was a significant departure from his earlier work, instead of his usual bardic style, it parodied contemporary music like dance and techno. The album was nominated for a Fryderyk Award.

After that surprising success, Bukartyk started working with the band Section (Sekcja), which was a more traditional rock group. The band was not a major success, and Bukartyk soon continued his solo career, releasing several more albums.

Bukartyk has been active in a number of musical genres, and his trademark style now involves mixing genres, especially rock, blues, folk, and reggae. He is also active in the tradition of sung poetry. He has released seven albums and written more than 400 songs, many of which have become major hits, and is also known for his radio show Snippets of Entertainment (Urywki z Rozrywki) on Polish radio station Troika. He has also occasionally acted in the Warsaw theater scene.

“I Feel Like I Will Die” (“Czuję, że umrę”), from Buktartyk’s 1999 album with Section, With the Head (Z głowy):

Lyrics for “Czuję, że umrę”:

Dla ciebie gotów jestem umrzeć
czuję, że umrę, bez ciebie.
Dla ciebie gotów jestem umrzeć
dlatego umrę przez ciebie. x2

Piję cztery dni, źle z oczu patrzy mi.
Takiego klienta, nikt tu nie pamięta.
Barman ząb ma złoty, odkąd robię mu obroty
Przed chwilą pod barem, schował mój zegarek.
Głosem pełnym potępienia
chce Ci przemówić do sumienia
a że masz nogi opalone,
on bierze twoją stronę.

Dla ciebie gotów jestem umrzeć
czuję, że umrę bez ciebie.
Dla ciebie gotów jestem umrzeć
dlatego umrę przez ciebie. x2

Pije cztery dni, źle z oczu patrzy mi.

“Buy a Dog” (“Kup sobie psa”), from Bukartyk’s 2014 album of the same name:

Lyrics for “Kup sobie psa”:

Nie żebym nie chciał cię znać
Albo że kładę się spać
No to mów:
Co takiego stało się?

Bo wyobraźni mi brak
By nagle uznać za fakt
Że ot tak
Przypomniałaś sobie mnie…

Co do mnie: tak, jestem sam
I nawet nieźle się mam
Wierz lub nie, poradziłem sobie z tym
Już chyba wiem czego chcę
Niczego nie mam za złe
Bo co złe, ulotniło się jak dym

Dzwonisz bo nie najlepiej Ci ze sobą
Pytasz czy pobyć ze mną mogłabyś
Kiedyś tyle bym dał by mieć Cię obok
Dzisiaj wiem, że to nie najlepsza myśl

Nawet nie nudzę się zbyt
Jest tyle książek i płyt
Minie wiek, zanim przebrnę przez to sam
Na szczęście czasu mam w bród
W lodówce wódka i lód
A mój pies lubi słuchać, gdy mu gram

A nim zgorzkniejesz do cna

Kiedyś tyle bym dał by mieć Cię obok
Dzisiaj wiem, że to nie najlepsza myśl

Dzwonisz bo nie najlepiej Ci ze sobą
Pytasz czy pobyć ze mną mogłabyś
Kiedyś tyle bym dał by mieć Cię obok
