Russia’s Top Movies: April-July 2020

Published: August 1, 2020

Like in most places in the world, Russia’s silver screens are dominated by Hollywood’s global blockbusters. Russia’s film industry has struggled with the financial crisis, but it is also capable of producing films that can occasionally compete locally with the American machine. Once a month, SRAS provides a lineup of the top Russian movies in Russia that ranked in the top 10 for weekend box-office take.

On 16 March 2020, Moscow mayor Sergey Sobyanin issued a decree prohibiting gatherings of more than 50 people. The next day, Russian Culture Minister Olga Lyubimova decreed that a many cultural establishments across Russia would close due to the global health crisis. Most Russian regions then passed similar restrictions and announced similar closures.

For this reason, nearly all movie theatres across Russia have remained closed for the months of April, May, and June. No box office take was recorded for the country. Theaters in most regions were given the OK to reopen on July 15. Many finally re-opened thier doors on August 1st.
