The battles around the city of Rzhev are among the toughest WWII battles fought by the Soviets. They bore strategic importance too, as they allowed the Soviets to push German forces back from Moscow. In the film, an episode of the Rzhev battles is looked at – a Red Army squadron is given an order to protect the village of Ovsyannikovo at all costs.
