Russia’s Top Russian Movies: October 2018

Like in most places in the world, Russia’s silver screens are dominated by Hollywood’s global blockbusters. Russia’s film industry has struggled with the financial crisis, but it is also capable of producing films that can occasionally compete locally with the American machine. Once a month, SRAS provides a lineup of the top Russian movies in Russia that ranked in the top 10 for weekend box-office take.

Непрощённый – Unforgiven – $5.8 million as of October 23, 2018

By mistake, a flight dispatcher sends two planes on the same route which results in the planes colliding and crashing. This accident forever changes Vitaly’s life as his wife and children were passengers on one of the planes. ​​Vitaly then travels to the crash site, where he finds the bodies of his loved ones. This sends Vitaly on a mission to find the dispatcher who is responsible for the death of his family.

Супербобровы. Народные мстители – Super Beavers. Folk Avengers – $1.7 million as of October 23, 2018

The film begins in Thailand, where the Beaver family is hiding from justice. Now they have to perform in the circus, showing their superpowers to tourists for money. Being considered a “circus monkey” family did not appeal to them as they all wanted to go back to their homeland. Eventually after a fight occurs within the family, they all return separately to Russia. At home, the Beaver family once again unites in a fight against villains, making them superheroes.

Несокрушимый – Indestructible – $1.43 million as of October 23, 2018

The film is based on a true story of the unique feat of the crew of the KV-1 tank. Having undertaken an unequal battle, where they are the underdogs, the crew of Semyon Konovalov destroyed 16 tanks, 2 armored vehicles and 8 vehicles with enemy manpower in the village of Nizhnemityakin, Tarasovsky district, Rostov region.

After the death of a man, the two women that loved him received messages. They both believe that the author of the messages can only be him. In hope of a miracle, the two women go on a journey  to uncover the mystery behind the mysterious messages.

Vova and his best friend Kisa earn money by engaging in illegal activities. Their life revolves around having fun, in pursuit of thrills and short-term pleasures. Soon, however, they meet another friend who makes the pair question their friendship, forcing them, and the audience, to answer the question: who are you?

Lucy Harnish has an English Literature degree with a double minor in Russian Culture and History from McGill University in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Lucy spent two semesters with SRAS studying Russian as a Second Language in St Petersburg, Russia in her quest to be able to reread the works of Turgenev, Dostoyevsky, and Tolstoy in the Russian language.
