Orgia Pravednikov (Оргия Праведников, Eng.: Orgy of the Righteous) is a Russian alternative rock band. They formed in Moscow in 1999 when guitarist Sergei Kalugin (Сергей Калугин) joined forces with the art-rock group ARTel (ARТель), and since then Orgia Pravednikov has continually honed its unique sound, which combines elements of acoustic and electronic music.
Orgia Pravednikov quickly released their first self-titled single, as well as a full-length album later that year. The album was called Converts, Depart! (Оглашенные, изыдите!), and quickly made the group popular. Over the next few years the group occupied itself primarily with playing live both in Moscow and around European Russia. In 2003 they released their second single, “Last Wars of a Dead Earth” (“Последний воин мёртвой земли”), which received mixed critical reviews.
The band’s second full-length album, the 2005 Doors! Doors! (Двери! Двери!), was radically different from the first. This album was highly experimental, even difficult to assign a genre, as each song was written almost in its own unique style. Orgia Pravednikov’s popularity grew markedly after this release, especially as several tracks made their way onto Nashe Radio and the group released a music video for the single “This Isn’t Life” (“Это не жизнь”).
The group’s next album, Departing Sun (Уходящее солнце), came out in 2007. This was the first album the sound of which all the members of Orgia Pravednikov were completely happy with. This album featured a great deal of synthesizer and other electronic instruments, and was similarly well-received by fans and critics.
The band’s next effort was called For Those Who See Dreams Vol. 1 (Для тех, кто видит сны Vol. 1). This was Orgia Pravednikov’s first album recorded in their own studio, and the group did a full performance of the album at Moscow’s Tochka club as a release celebration. In the fall of 2010, the record label Electroshock put out a limited release of the album with English liner notes that was distributed around the United States and Great Britain to positive reviews.
The next few years saw several more successful releases, including Sheetrock (Шитрок), whose single “Our Motherland—The USSR” (“Наша Родина — СССР”) topped the June 2012 charts. They also recorded a track on a tribute album to Vladimir Vysotskiy.
In 2015, Orgia Pravednikov came out with For Those Who See Dreams Vol. 2 (Для тех, кто видит сны Vol. 2), which had been in the works for a number of years. From this album the band released a music video for “Flores de Muertos,” which featured fragments from Soviet director Sergei Eisenstein’s Que Viva Mexico! (Да здравствует Мексика!).
