Staisha

Staisha/Miss Baas

Published: November 15, 2016

Staisha is the stage-name for one Nastya Aleksandrina (Настя Александрина), a Moscow-born hip-hop, reggae, and R&B singer/songwriter. Trained as a singer from a young age, she would go on to graduate from the Gnessin State Musical College, where she studied jazz and pop vocal styles. Although she began her career as a backup singer for several popular performers and Russian hip-hop groups, she eventually began a solo career in 2009, with the release of the single “Notes of the Soul” (“Ноты Души”). Following a string of successful singles produced alongside her frequent collaborator Noize MC, Staisha released her debut album, Not Included and Unreleased (Невошедшее и Невышедшее), in 2011.

It has been noted that Staisha’s interest in American dance and pop music started when she was five, when she was first introduced to the music of Michael Jackson. By the age of 10, she was singing in the Bolshoi Theater’s children’s choir, which led to a trip to the US, where she performed alongside gospel singers. Only three years later, she began composing her own songs. The impressive vocal versatility that Staisha would later develop is perhaps due in part to the wide-ranging musical environments that she experienced as a child.

Working largely as a supporting musician after she completed he studies, Staisha’s first big break came in 2007 on the set of the Ukrainian version of The Voice, where she impressed the judges with her cover of Diana King’s “Shy Guy.” Two years later “Notes of the Soul,” her first single as a solo artist, made waves upon its digital release despite a lack of promotional support. Staisha gained a slew of attention and eventually the song saw radio play on Radio Next (Радио Next”). Her second single, “Ctrl-Alt-Del,” released in 2010, maintained a long presence on the top of the Russian MTV show Russian Top Ten (Русское Десятке).

But 2010 also saw tragedy strike the young singer’s family, when her sister, Olga, passed away due to injuries sustained in a traffic accident. The identity of the other driver as the vice-president of the oil giant Lukoil, and the subsequent lack of charges levied against him, would inspire Staisha to release two politically charged singles, “Mercedes S666” (“Мерседес S666”) and “Mercedes 777” (“Мерседес 777”), in hopes of drawing attention to the case and to the privileges of the well-connected.

In 2015 Staisha released an EP, M1553225, under a new name, Miss Baas. This album features much heavier reggae and dub influences, as well as strictly English-language lyrics. It has helped to garner her more international attention among dance-hall enthusiasts.

The Lyrics for “Ctrl-Alt-Del”:

Ctrl+Z,
Ctrl+Alt+Delete.

Ctrl+Z,
Ctrl+Alt+Delete.

Ctrl+Z,
Ctrl+Alt+Delete.

Ctrl+Z,
Ctrl+Alt+Delete.
