Irina Dubtsova is a Russian singer known for her energetic pop style, extensive series of collaborations, and strong songwriting ability.
Dubtsova was born in 1982 in Volgograd. She grew up with music in both formal and informal capacities. Her father was a musician who instilled a love of music and singing in Dubtsova. At only six years old, Dubtsova began to attend music school. At eleven, she transitioned into making music for an audience when her parents created the children’s musical group Джем (Jam). The group sang around forty songs, the majority of which were credited as being composed by Dubtsova.
In 1999, Dubtsova began to seek out opportunities as a soloist. She performed “Hijo De La Luna,” which her dad sent to producer Igor Matvienko. As luck would have it, Matvienko was looking to form a band and invited her to join the band Девочки alongside artists Tatyana Gersimova, Valentina Rubtsova, and Olympiada Teterich. The group’s first song, “Говорила мама (у-ла-ла)” (“Mama Said (Oo-La-La)”) failed to achieve widespread popularity despite playing on Russian MTV. The release was further marred by rumors that Девочки had plagiarized the song in part from the well-known American trio TLC. Dubtsova left the band soon after, heading off on her own before their first album was released.
Dubtsova spent the next couple years finishing college. In 2001, she graduated from the Volgograd Municipal Arts Institute with a specialist’s degree in academic singing. She then went to work for SBS Entertainment, where she met singer Anton Makarsky, who contracted Dubtsova to write the majority of the songs on his first album.
In 2004, Dubtsova moved on to pursue her own dreams. She appeared on the fourth season of the reality talent show Фабрика звёзд (Star Factory) performing duets with a variety of artists and bands. She also sung an original song, “О нём” (“About Him”), which went on to become the most popular song in the history of the show. As her career opportunities flourished, so did Dubtsova’s personal life. Dubtsova married soloist Roman Chernitsyn during the competition. Dubtsova won the fourth season of Фабрика звёзд. Along with the resultant fame, she also won a convertible car, a contract to record a solo album, and the right to represent Russia at the New Wave youth singer contest, where she won second place.
The following year, Dubtsova released her debut album, О нём (About Him), named after her popular hit. In 2007, she released her second album Ветра (Winds), which she wrote entirely herself. In 2008, she collaborated with the popular artist Polina Gagarina on the song “Кому? Зачем?” (“To Whom? Why?”), which won the 2010 Mus-TV Award and was nominated for “Duet of the Year.” The single also sparked tabloid headlines with speculation that the negative content about men was related to Dubtsova’s now-troubled marriage. Dubtsova went through a divorce the same year. Her relationship troubles, however, did little to slow Dubtsova’s career momentum. She continues to release music and competes on musical game shows. She sells out concert arenas throughout the Russian-speaking world. She was a featured artist at the Heat music festival in Azerbaijan, and her songs frequent the radio waves.
Dubtsova has involved herself with social issues on multiple occasions. In support of a 2010 UNICEF project targeted at preventing tetanus in mothers and infants, she recorded a lullaby entitled “Спи, моё солнышко” (“Sleep, My Little Sun”). In 2012, she performed the duet “Живи” (“Live!”) in honor of World AIDS Day. Dubtsova continues to contribute her talents towards raising awareness of critical social issues.
Irina Dubtsova’s music can be found on YouTube, Amazon Music, Apple Music, and Spotify.
“Факт” Lyrics
Translated Lyrics
Just let my hand go.
After all that we’ve been through, you still don’t understand
My pulse is racing. I so love
everything you do and how you do it,
except at the parking lots, and hotels,
then you hide for a week, like a jerk.
I was never afraid of the dark,
it and I got on good speaking terms long ago.
But you’re fifty shades of darkness.
You’re not my type.
Just let my hand go.
Don’t hold me like I’m yours.
Don’t try to touch my soul.
And don’t blow in my ear.
After all we’ve been through, you still don’t understand
We’re different. That’s a fact. Fact.
Just let my hand go.
Don’t hold me like I’m yours.
Don’t try to touch my soul.
And don’t blow in my ear.
After all we’ve been through, you still don’t understand
We’re different. That’s a fact. Fact.
Stop! Think of the right word to say,
or I won’t be coming back, and you can play all by yourself.
Stop! Who’ll be a bigger fool than me?
With me, that won’t keep happening.
I was never afraid of the dark,
we got on good speaking terms long ago.
Fact.
