Ivanushki International (Иванушки International) is a Russian band founded in 1994 by producer Igor Matvienko. The original members were Andrey Grigoryev-Apollonov, Kirill Andreev, and Igor Sorin. The name of the group came about when, after they had performed under several different names, someone in the studio where they were recording a song said, “What kind of Ivanushkis are these?,” referring to a character in several Russian fairy tales that is generally foolish but successful.
The group’s musical aesthetic is a combination of Soviet pop, Russian folk influences, and international dance tunes. Their first hit and second single, “Rain Clouds” (“Тучи”), released in 1995 was popular perhaps because it was a style different from other Russian pop hits of the time. The group’s first studio album, Of Course It’s Him (Конечно он), came out in 1996, and it included both covers of hits from the 1980s and original songs by Sorin. Sorin left the group in 1998, however, after they released two more albums that had increasing popularity. He intended to start a solo career, but later in the year he fell from a balcony and died soon after, in what was ruled to be probably a suicide.
The group continued, though they did not forget about Sorin, however, and in 1999 they released an album Fragments from Life (Фрагменты из жизни), including earlier songs written by Sorin. The next iteration of the group featured Oleg Yakovlev, who took Sorin’s place as singer. Later in 1999, the new group released the first album with Yakovlev as the soloist. Over the next few years the group continued to find success, even performing at the 2007 Olympics in Sochi, but after that their star began to fade. Their newer songs stopped becoming hits.
More recently, Yakovlev left the band in 2013 to start a solo career and was replaced by Kirill Turichenko. In 2015 they had a concert celebrating their twentieth anniversary as a band. Over the years they have won a number of awards for their music, and their hits have reached the top of Russian charts.
