Family of Sites 
Lumen is a Russian rock, alt rock, and punk band formed on February 12, 1998 in Ufa, Russia. Lumen means “light” in Latin. The band consistently uses the English “Lumen” although occasionally some media use the Russified “Люмен.”
Current members include Rustem Bulatov (Рустем «Тэм» Булатов), Igor Mamaev (Игорь «Гарик» Мамаев), Yevgeni Trishin (Евгений «Шмель» Тришин), and Denis Shakhanov (Денис «Дэн» Шаханов). They are arguably one of the most famous Russian alternative bands even though they are self-taught. Many of their songs are inspired by controversial events and issues that happen in and out of Russia.
Though the band was formed in 1998, they didn’t release their first live album until 2001. Their first studio album, Without Preservatives (Без консервантов) took even longer and was release in 2003. The wait appeared to be worth it however, as one of their songs, “Sid & Nancy”, reached #1 and was the 13th most charting song of all time on the popular Nashe Radio radio station. Many Russian teens at the time said they “felt a connection” to the song, similar to how American teens felt a decade earlier with the release of Nirvana’s Smells Like Teen Spirit. The success was considered to be the turning point for the band.
Doubling down, the Lumen quickly put out another album, Three Ways (Три Пути), in 2004. The album produced two more #1 hits, C4 and How Much? (Сколько?). Lumen then went on their first tour to twenty cities around Russia. At this point, they could do no wrong and put out their third album within three years, One Blood (Одной крови). So in 2005, they again reached #1 with the song Don’t Rush (Не Спеши).
After the rush, studio album production slowed somewhat. Between 2005 and 2009, the band only release two new album, Freedom (Свобода) and Truth? (Правда?). Both albums were well received, but no new #1 hits were produced. Interestingly, the lyrics of many songs in Freedom (Свобода) were political commentary on the state of the country at the time. Things changed from 2010 to 2013, when Lumen again rapidly released an album per year, with Peace (Мир), Labyrinth (Лабиринт), In Pieces (На Части), and No Time for Love (Нет Времени для Любви). Of the four albums, Peace, Labyrinth, and No Time for Love all produced #1 hits with the songs Don’t Need Dreams (Не Надо Снов), Zeros and Ones (Нули и Единицы), and Forgive (Прости), respectively.
To date, Lumen has released seven #1 hits. Twelve other songs made the Top 10 but failed to reach #1, thus leaving them with a total of nineteen charting songs over the past eighteen years. Even now, Lumen shows no hint of slowing as they’ve completed three tours, three singles, and a live album within the past year. With the amount of success Lumen has seen, they will undoubtedly be considered classic Russian rock within the next two decades.
