Myslovitz

Myslovitz is a Polish rock band that started in 1992 by Artur Rojek (vocals, guitar) and Wojkta Powaga (guitar) while they were students in Mysłowice. The name of the band is based on a Latin transcription of the name of their hometown.

They were soon joined by brothers Jacek (bass guitar) and Wojtek Kuderski (drums), and started recording music in 1993. They only started using the name Myslovitz in 1994, though, when they won a prestigious music contest: Maciek Pilarczyk, the head of Radio Łódź, discovered them in the Garaż 94 music contest, where he was a member of the jury. The group had previously used the name The Freshmen, after the 1990 American film, The Freshman.

The group almost came in first place in the contest but Pilarczyk engineered the contest so they would only win second place—the prize for which was a recording session at Radio Łódź. The album the group recorded there, Myslovitz, was named best newcomer of the year by several Polish music magazines.

In 1996 the group released its second album, which was quite different from the first and much more lyrical. The album won the group a nomination for Best Debut at the Polish Music Industry Awards, the Fryderyks. They also got a new guitar player at this time, Przemek Myszor. Over the next few years the band released more critically acclaimed albums, toured internationally, and was nominated for several more Fryderyk Awards.

Their also sound continued to evolve: their 1999 album, which had had a Brit pop feel, was very different from their earlier works. Their 2002 album focused on social issues, and when they received a golden record award later in the year it was auctioned on the radio, with the proceeds going to the children of miners who died in the Wesoła mines in Mysłowice. They also won an MTV European Music Award for Best Polish Act in 2002, after two earlier unsuccessful nominations.

Over the next few years the band slowed down a little, with a few of their members starting solo careers and new bands, though they continued to perform concerts together. Powaga and Myszor formed a new band, No!No!No!, with several new members, and Wojtek Kuderski joined the Polish alternative rock band Penny Lane.

In 2011, Myslovitz released a new album and then toured through Poland to promote it. The band still exists today, though Rojek left in 2012 and a new singer, Michał Kowalonek, replaced him. The band in its new iteration released an album, 1.577, in 2013.

“The Sound of Solitude” (“Długość dźwięku samotności”), the first single from the 1999 album Love in a Time of Pop Culture (Miłość w czasach popkultury); it won the Fryderyk award for best song:

Lyrics for “Długość dźwięku samotności”:

I nawet kiedy będę sam
Nie zmienię się, to nie mój świat
Przede mną droga którą znam,
Którą ja wybrałem sam

Tak, zawsze genialny
Idealny muszę być
I muszę chcieć, super luz i już
Setki bzdur i już, to nie ja

I nawet kiedy będę sam
Nie zmienię się, to nie mój świat
Przede mną droga którą znam,
Którą ja wybrałem sam

Wiesz, lubię wieczory
Lubię się schować na jakiś czas
I jakoś tak, nienaturalnie
Trochę przesadnie, pobyć sam
Wejść na drzewo i patrzeć w niebo
Tak zwyczajnie, tylko że
Tutaj też wiem kolejny raz
Nie mam szans być kim chcę

I nawet kiedy będę sam
Nie zmienię się, to nie mój świat
Przede mną droga którą znam,
Którą ja wybrałem sam

Noc, a nocą gdy nie śpię
Wychodzę choć nie chcę spojrzeć na
Chemiczny świat, pachnący szarością
Z papieru miłością, gdzie ty i ja
I jeszcze ktoś, nie wiem kto
Chciałby tak przez kilka lat
Zbyt zachłannie i trochę przesadnie
Pobyć chwilę sam, chyba go znam

I nawet kiedy będę sam
Nie zmienię się, to nie mój świat
Przede mną droga którą znam,
Którą ja wybrałem sam

“Sooner, Later, Next” (“Predzej Pozniej Dalej”), a single from their 2013 album, 1.577:

Lyrics for “Predzej Pozniej Dalej”:

wszystko albo nic
gdzie poniosą myśli mnie?

I dokąd znów idę
czy wszystko możliwe
poczekaj gdzieś na mnie
jak wybrać najlepiej

Zbyt łatwo nie będzie
na końcu ja nie wiem
na końcu jest pięknie
na końcu jest pięknie
