Patrick the Pan

Patrick the Pan is a Polish soft rock band consisting of frontman Piotr Madej, Justyn Małodobry, Kuba Duda, and Adam Stępniowski. The band’s first album was composed, recorded, and performed entirely by Madej. Patrick the Pan’s music is soft and sad, as well as artfully composed. In Madej’s own words, their songs are “sad songs. Not of love. Of love. Of animals. Of people. Of you.”

Patrick the Pan hails originally from Krakow. Before being joined by Duda (electric guitar, bass, and vocals) and Stepniowski (drums, samples, and vocals), Madej put his skills to work as a composer, producer, songwriter, singer, pianist, and guitarist to record Patrick the Pan’s critically acclaimed first album: Something of an End (2014). The group’s second album, this time with the full lineup, came out in 2015. This album was called …nothing like leaves (…niczym jak liśćmi). As a result of the popularity of this second album, Patrick the Pan was invited to play several major music festivals, including Double Open’er Fest and Off Festival.

The group’s name originally came from a typing error. Madej explained in a radio interview that he had purchased a Ukrainian carved pen while in high school, which he called “Patrick the Pen.” After mistyping this name as “Patrick the Pan,” Madej decided to adopt the typo as his band name. The ornamentation and ease of writing with the pen came to stand as a allegory for Madej’s music.

Here is “Niedopowieści,” from Patrick the Pan’s first album:

Lyrics for “Niedopowieści”:

I ogonek, którym spod dywanu pył i brud wszelki będę wyciągał i
takiego dalej podaj mnie.

Ref:

Ref:
To o czym milczysz w kolce obrośnie i wróci z podwójną siłą.

Here is a live performance of “Lewiwa”:

Lyrics for “Lewiwa”:

Z dorosłością moje serce bawi się
w chowanego. Długo nim znajdziecie je.
Bo jak to, że w judaszu nuda
a my jej otwieramy drzwi?

Czytam Cię aż nazbyt dobrze, nudno tu
Pod fantazjami śpi mój wyświechtany ból.
Bo nocy zimnych, deszczu pełnych
nie da się bez tulenia.

Pamiętam ilekroć mówiłem, że wystarczy już
Pamiętam jak te słowa pokrył grubej warstwy kurz
a potem… zawiał wiatr.
Bo gdyby nas opisać i nut użyć zamiast słów
stawiłbym z początku rudy, wiolinowy klucz
a potem… długo nic.
