Таras Коmpanichenkо (Тарас Компаніченко) is an influential Ukrainian singer-songwriter, recording artist, kobzar, banduryst (a player of the Ukrainian bandura), lutenist, lira player, and composer. Коmpanichenkо is an active participant in the Kobzar Guild (Kobzarskyi Tsekh) as well as the musical ensembles Chorea Kozacka (Хорея Козацька) and Sarmatica (Сарматика). He was an active participant in the 2004–5 Orange Revolution in Ukraine, and has received the prestigious Vasyl Stus Prize (Премія імені Василя Стуса). Коmpanichenkо performs a variety of folk songs, including Cossack and traditional Ukrainian music.
Коmpanichenkо comes from a family of deported Cossacks from the Arkhangelsk region of Russia. After moving to Ukraine, the family embraced that country’s tradition, and Коmpanichenkо’s father gave him a Ukrainian bandura as his first musical instrument. Коmpanichenkо spent most of his childhood in Kyiv’s Akademgorodok region, completing high school in one of the only schools in Kyiv with Ukrainian-language instruction. He also studied the bandura in music school.
Later, Коmpanichenkо studied at the Kosiv School of Applied and Decorative Arts, followed by the Lviv Institute of Applied Arts and the Ukrainian Academy of Arts, all in service of becoming an art historian. Коmpanichenkо would later abandon this career path in favor of music.
Коmpanichenkо has been a part of the Ukrainian independence movement since the 1980s, when he joined the Association of Independent Ukrainian Youth (Спілки Незалежної Української Молоді). He participated in many demonstrations against the Soviet occupation, often playing his bandura at protest events. In 2002 Коmpanichenkо took part in a pilgrimage to the mass grave of the Ukrainian intelligentsia murdered by the Soviets at Sandarmokh (Сандармох) and Solovetsky Islands (Соловецкие острова).
During the Orange Revolution, Kompanichenko appeared a number of times on the main stage in Maidan Square in Kyiv. He also gave dozens of concerts to Ukrainian soldiers during the Ukraine–Russia conflict that began in 2014.
