Ivan Dorn (Іван Дорн in Ukrainian; Иван Дорн in Russian) is a Ukrainian, Russian-speaking performer.Known primarily today through his career as a pop musician, Dorn has also found success as a TV personality in Ukraine, and in a handful of acting roles—most famously as Kostya in Happy Guys (Весёлые Ребята, 2014).
Dorn was born in Chelyabinsk, Russia, but at the tender age of two, his family relocated to Slavutich, Ukraine, where his father secured work at the now-defunct Chernobyl power plant. Although born Ivan Yeromin (Єрьомін in Ukrainian; Ерёмин in Russian), his mother opted to legally change his surname to her maiden name, Dorn, in his second year of school. His musical education began with formal singing and piano instruction when he was just six years old.
As a musician, Dorn’s career took shape largely via a handful of standout performances at music competitions. He placed third and second at the Black Sea Games in 2001 and 2005, respectively, and took first place at Moscow’s Light Your Star competition, to name a few. In 2007, he met Ana Dobrydova (Ана Добрыдова) at a Jamiroquai concert and they proceeded to form a successful collaborative project called Пара Нормальных—a play on the English word “paranormal” that translates to “A Pair of Normal People.” Their 2008 debut album, I’m Coming Up with a Happy End (Я Придумаю Happy End), consistently ranked at the top of Russian pop charts.
However, in 2010 Dorn left Пара Нормальных in order to embark on a solo career. Since then he has recorded two successful records, Co‘N’Dorn (2012) and Randorn (2014). Regarding the 2012 album, critic Oleg Sobolyov (Олег Соболёв) lauded Dorn as “the world’s best performer of Russian-speaking … pop.”
Politically, Dorn has expressed sympathy for the territorial integrity of Ukraine. Working alongside his friend Sergey Pritula (Сергей Притула), a Ukrainian television host, he helped facilitate a collection of donations to supply the Ukrainian military with medicines and equipment in the Donbas region. These sympathies have won Dorn the ire of certain individuals on the far right of Russian politics, with a member of Vladimir Putin’s ruling United Russia party, Vitaliy Milonov (Виталий Милонов), even calling for a ban on future performances by Dorn in Russia.
