Svetlana Surganova (Светлана Яковлена Сурганова) is a Russian singer, musician, soloist, poet, and band leader most famous for her role in the Night Snipers (Ночные снайперы, 1993–2002) and as leader of the group Surganova and Orchestra (Сурганова и оркестр).

Surganova, born in 1968, is originally from Leningrad and started to write songs at the age of fourteen. She started her first band, Pitchfork (Камертон), while still in high school. Later, as a medical student at St. Petersburg Pediatric Academy, Surganova formed another band, this one called Liga (Лига), which saw a lot of success in Petersburg student music competitions.

Surganova’s next band, Something Else (Нечто иное), also became fairly popular after numerous performances in the festival circuit in European Russia. It was during this time that Surganova began to establish a distinctive part of her style: the use of classic Russian poets like Anna Akhmatova, Marina Tsvetaeva, and Joseph Brodsky as the basis for her lyrics.

In August 1993 Surganova began her most famous project, the Night Snipers (Ночные снайперы), alongside Diana Arbenina (Диана Арбенина). This band started out as an acoustic duo, with Surganova on violin and Arbenina on guitar. Surganova played on most of Night Snipers’s most popular studio albums, including Drop of Tar/In a Barrel of Honey (Капля дёгтя/В бочке мёда), Children’s Babble (Детский лепет), and Tsunami (Цунами). In 1996 Surganova also collaborated with Arbenina on two poetic compositions: Goal (Цель) and Rotter (Дрянь).

During her period with Nighttime Snipers, Surganova continued occasionally to play with Something Else, as well as in other groups such as Kuzya BAND (Кузя BAND). Surganova decided to leave Night Snipers in 2002 to pursue solo projects, the most famous of which is Surganova and Orchestra.

Surganova and Orchestra has released a slew of full-length albums over the years, including Alive (Живой), Ships (Корабли), Beloved Chopin (Возлюбленная Шопена), and The Test of Time: Pt. 1: Perpetual Motion (Проверено временем. Most recently, Surganova and Orchestra released the 2014 album Game in the Classics (Игра в классики).

Here is Surganova and Orchestra with the single “White Song” (“Белая песня”):

Lyrics for “Белая песня”:

Here is Surganova’s solo single “Angel” (“Ангел”):

Lyrics for “Ангел”:
