Smyslovye Gallyutsinatsii (Смысловые галлюцинации) is a Russian alt-rock band from Yekaterinburg whose sound has evolved from straightforward punk rock to, in recent years, more experimental works that sound closer to post-punk or indie. The band’s name translates to “meaningful hallucinations.”
Smyslovye Gallyutsinatsii formed in 1989, at the end of the Soviet period, but did not find a particularly wide audience until the late 1990s. Like many groups on the border between “older,” more Soviet-rock-inspired music and “newer,” more Western-looking influence, Smyslovye Gallyutsinatsii often straddles the line between electronic and acoustic music.
In 1996 Smyslovye Gallyutsinatsii began playing shows in Yekaterinburg’s first alternative rock club, J22, which would become the group’s home base. That same year, Smyslovye Gallyutsinatsii released their first full-length album, Separation NOW (Разлука NOW). This year also saw Smyslovye Gallyutsinatsii’s first experience touring as a professional band, with a 22-day tour around European Russia.
The following year, Smyslovye Gallyutsinatsii released their second album, Here and Now (Здесь и сейчас), which showed a strong influence from the iconic Russian post-punk band Agata Kristi (Агата Кристи). However, it was not until two years later that Smyslovye Gallyutsinatsii saw radio airplay. This came with the single “Rose-Colored Glasses” (“Розовые очки”), off the band’s third album, and it climbed high on the June 1999 charts. Also in 1999, another of their singles, “Forever Young” (“Вечно молодой”, was featured on the soundtrack for the cult classic film Brother 2 (Брат 2).
In 2004, Smyslovye Gallyutsinatsii turned fifteen and held a celebratory concert at which they unveiled a greatest-hits album, 66 rus, followed by a DVD the following year. In 2008 the band unveiled a new album, Hearts and Motors (Сердца и моторы), live on Nashe Radio.
In recent years Smyslovye Gallyutsinatsii has continued to release music to general acclaim. They have been featured on numerous film and television soundtracks, such as Aleksei Fyodorenko’s Khronoglaz (Хроноглаз, 2012), Aleksandr Melnik’s Territory (Территория, 2014), and the TV series A Short Course in Happy Life (Краткий курс счастливой жизни).
Despite the group’s continued success, member Sergei Bobunets (Сергей Бобунец) announced in 2015 that Smyslovye Gallyutsinatsii would cease activity in 2017.
