Brigadnyi Podriad (Бригадный подряд) in Russian means “contract services”, a tounge-in-cheek reference to the bureaucratic side of Soviet culture. They are one of Russia’s most popular punk bands, known especially for their live shows.

Brigadnyi Podriad‘s career started in Leningrad in 1986 when classmates Nikolar Mikhailov, Aleksandr “Santer” Lur’ianov, Fyodor “Behemoth” Lavrov, and Dmitri Babich recorded their self-titled debut album. It included what are still some of their best known songs, including “Why Did I (Love an Idiot)” (“Зачем я (полюбила идиота)”), “Cut, Hammer” (“Режь, серп”), and “Kitty” (“Кошечка”). The album was released via magnitizdat, the musical equivalent to samizdat, or illegal self-publishing, and quickly spread around the Soviet Union. Two years later, Brigadnyi Podriad released their second album, Kirovsky Factory (Кировский завод), and began to perform often at the Leningrad Rock Club, which was a hub of the underground Soviet music scene, as well as at various festivals around the country.

For the periods from 1990 to 1992, and then again from 1994 to 1995, the band broke up. In the two years between break-ups, Brigadnyi Podriad managed to release two more albums, Rose Water (Розовая вода) and Rock’n’Royal. In 1996, with some lineup changes, including adding Ekaterina “Kat” Kozlova on drums, Brigadnyi Podriad resumed once again. They released a fourth album, Thinner (Худшее) the following year, and began to actively play live once again.

In 2001 S.O.S. Records, founded by the seminal Russian punk band NAIV (НАИВ), released an album of Brigadnyi Podriad’s old songs. One of them reached number two on radio rotation, and the band earned an invitation to play at Invasion Fest (Нашествие) that year alongside many other Russian punk greats. That same year Brigadnyi Podriad opened for England’s The Exploited in St. Petersburg.

In 2004 the band released Beauty Eats the World (Красота Сожрёт Мир), a play on Dostoevsky’s line in Notes From Underground: “Beauty saves the world” (“Красота спасет мир”). The group released a slew of reasonably successful albums over the course of the early 2000s, and finally in 2013 put out their most successful album, Sonambulance (Сомнамбула). Three singles from this album, “Piter Rock’N’Roll” (“Питер рок-н-ролл”), “Guitars” (“Гитары”), and “Welcome Aboard” (titled in English, but sung in Russian), climbed to number one, and the group followed with a supporting tour to over fifty cities in and around Russia. That year they headlined major rock music festivals across in Russia.

Following this massive success, Brigadnyi Podriad continues to make music today.
Here is Brigadnyi Podriad at the 2008 festival Punk Rock Lessons in Tver, with the song “Pararuram” (“Парарурам”):

Lyrics for “Парарурам”:

Here is Brigadnyi Podriad with a live performance of “Truth” (“Правда”) at Invasion Fest 2014:

Lyrics for “Правда”:
