Family of Sites 
Tarakany! (Тараканы!) was one of the first Russian punk bands to emerge after the fall of the Soviet Union in 1991. Tarakany!, which translates to “Cockroaches!”, was formerly known as Four Cockroaches (Четыре таракана) until shortening their name in 1997. Tarakany!’s early work is straightforward punk rock in the vein of classic street punk bands like The Exploited or Cro-Mags. Today, while after nearly three decades as a band their recent releases are much more poppy and melodic.
Initially called Kutuzovsky Prospekt after the Moscow street on which the band members lived, the group quickly changed their name to Four Cockroaches. Their first album, Duty Free Songs was a DIY release in 1992 and distributed only amongst friends. The original vocalist Denis Petukhov (Денис Петухов) left the band shortly after this release, and was replaced by Dmitri Spirin (Дмитрий Спирин), who still heads the band today. In 1995, they released their second album, entitled Best Before…, which was performed entirely in English.
During the mid-90s Four Cockroaches was part of the youth movement known as “Learn to Swim” (“Учитесь плавать”), which centered around a radio show dedicated to extreme and alternative music and which often played demos on the air of young punk bands. Four Cockroaches was invited to play the second annual Learn to Swim Festival (1995) on the same stage as Rage Against the Machine and a slew of then-popular Russian punk and hardcore bands. Later that year they shared the stage with punk legends The Toy Dolls and The Stranglers.
By 2003, now on their tenth album, and having played a big role in the development of the 90s Russian punk scene, Tarakany! became known internationally. Freedom Street (Улица Свободы) was released by a Swiss record label, which gave Tarakany! an international audience. That same year the group went on a Russian tour, the last three shows of which Tarakany! performed in collaboration with Mark Ramone under the name Marky Ramone & The Pinhead Army.
Tarakany! is still playing today. Notably, in 2014 they released an album in America called Russian Democrazy (again, sung in English), and a double album called MaximumHappy in 2013 with the participation of members of Germany’s Die Ärzte and American political pop-punk veterans Anti-Flag.
