Family of Sites 
t.A.T.u. (originally Tatu in English and Тату in Russian, and eventually marketed under t.A.T.u in both languages) is perhaps the most famous modern Russian band. Well known not only in Russia but around the world, it was founded in 1999 by producer Ivan Shapovalov and composer Aleksandr Voytinskiy. For the entire life of the band, it was a duet composed of Yulia Volkova (Юлия Волкова) and Lena (Yelena) Katina (Лена Катина). Both had participated in the children’s musical group Restless People (Непоседы), along with contemporary Russian singer Sergey Lazarev.
t.A.T.u. was originally meant to appear as though Volkova and Katina were a lesbian couple—lesbian schoolgirls, to be exact—and this is probably what has formed their initial and enduring fame/notoriety and popularity. They became known for wearing not traditionally feminine attire in concerts and kissing frequently in the middle of songs.
The group’s first single was “I’ve Gone Crazy” (“Я сошла с ума”), which appeared in 2000 and spent a long time on the top of Russian charts. Their first album, 200 in the Wrong Lane (200 по встречной), appeared in 2001 and was very successful. The English-language version of the album came out in 2002 in the US. Also released was “All the Things She Said,” the English version of “I’ve Gone Crazy,” which became a worldwide phenomenon and propelled t.A.T.u. to the heights of charts and fame. They represented Russia in the 2003 Eurovision with their song “Don’t Believe, Don’t Fear” (“Не верь, не войсья”), coming in third place.
Volkova and Katina released six albums together in total—three in English, three in Russian—before splitting up (the band, that is—they were never a real couple) in 2009 to start solo projects. The group lives on, though, as they have occasionally still performed concerts as t.A.T.u., including before the opening ceremonies of the 2014 Olympics in Sochi. These days, the controversy of the group’s image has overshadowed its music, though the music itself was legitimately popular for quite a long time in Russia and Europe.
Volkova has since attempted to move into acting, staring as a female lead in a Russian film called Zombie Holidays (Zомби каникулы). The movie, though, was an all-around flop and Volkova’s performance was panned by both critics and audiences. Katina has gone on to a solo music career with some success.
