Dżem

Published: October 31, 2016

Dżem is a Polish band that plays at the border of rock and blues music. It’s considered one of the best-known and most important blues–rock bands, with a prolific history spanning more than thirty different albums. While the band currently has six members, only two of those members, brothers Adam (vocals and guitar) and Benedykt “Beno” (bass guitar and vocals) Otręba, are founding members. The third founder was former keyboardist Pawel Berger, who was killed in a car accident in 2005.

The current band lineup is Adam Otręba (guitarist since 1973), Beno Otręba (bass guitarist from 1973 to 1976 and 1980 to the present), Maciej Balcar (a vocalist with the band since 2001), Jerzy Styczyński (a guitarist with the band since 1979), Zbigniew Szczerbiński (drummer since 1992), and Janusz Borzucki (on keyboards since 2005).

The band was formed in 1973 by the Otręba brothers and Berger. Later the same year, they were joined by Ryszard Riedel, a self-taught vocalist. At this time, the band performed under the unofficial name Jam. In 1974, this name was replaced by Dżem, due to a phonetic misspelling by a concert organizer.

Adam Otręba left the band from 1976 to 1980. During this period, Riedel met guitarist Jerzy Styczyński, who joined the band in 1979. Styczyński’s career had begun when he joined a team of guitarists who worked in a small car factory in Tychy, taking part in occasional local performances with them. It was at one of these performances that Riedel met Styczyński, though Styczyński did not join the band until some time later.

In 1980, the band performed at a festival for young musicians (the Przeglądu Muzyki Młodej Generacji) in Jarocin, where they took third place in the competition. In 1982, it debuted with the singles “Paw” and “Whisky” (original titles in English). After this debut, the band went on tour, including another visit to the festival in Jarocin and a visit to the Rawa Blues festival in Katowice. After a second single released in 1984, the band worked to create the debut album Cegła (Brick), which was released in 1985 and quickly became popular. To date, more than 115,000 copies of the album have been sold.

Between 1985 and 1994, the band continued on the same track, with a series of album releases and tours. During this time, Riedel developed problems with drug addiction, which distanced him from the other band members and made it difficult for him to manage a regular job. As he missed more practices and performances, he was temporarily removed from the band due to his poor health. His last concert was on March 16, 1994, and he died on July 30, 1994. The direct cause of death was heart failure.

After Riedel’s death, the band continued touring and releasing albums regularly, including performing two concerts commemorating Riedel. In 2004, Dżem released a hit, “The Cradle” (“Do kołyski”), as well as the first of two recordings from performances at Woodstock. In January 2005, the band was involved in a car accident that killed founding member and keyboardist Paul Berger. The band went on hiatus for a few months to recuperate, resuming performances in May.

Since 2005, Dżem has continued regular performances and releases, quickly expanding its discography. Their most recent studio album, Muza (Muse), from 2010, reached gold- and platinum-level sales.

One of Dżem’s earliest and most popular hits, “Whisky”:

Lyrics for “Whisky”:

Idź do diabla” – mówią ludzie pełni cnót.

And a later hit, “That’s All I Have” (“To wszystko co mam”):

Lyrics for “To wszystko co mam”:

Pustynia życia
A pośrodku ja
Pytam w którą stronę mam iść
Dookoła nic, tylko piach, tylko piach…

W blasku księżyca
Dostrzegam coś
Jakby jakiś znak dany mi
Pytanie, czy to złudzenie, czy może nie?

Tulę się w sobie
Pamiętam ten dzień
Z ramion matki uciekłem w świat
Myśląc że tak lepiej, lepiej tak

Gdybym mógł wrócić
Odwrócić czas
Bez wahania oddałbym to

I odzyskam myśli straconei jeszcze coś… Jeszcze to coś

Jak to być może?
Jak stało się?
Do niedawna przyjaciół w brud
Teraz pustka i głód – głód zrozumienia

I odzyskam myśli stracone
i jeszcze coś… Jeszcze to coś

Tak ulotnego
Pozornie nic
To coś bez czego
Nie, nie warto żyć
Nie warto żyć…

Jutro ruszę tam w obcą stronę
Bojąc się, że znów zgubiłem cel
Może wszystko jest już stracone
A może nie… A może nie…

Jutro ruszę tam, w inną stronę
Z wiarą, że choć raz nagrodzi mnie los
I odzyskam myśli stracone
jeszcze coś… Jeszcze to coś

Jutro ruszę tam…
Może wszystko jest stracone…
Może wszystko jest stracone…
A może nie…
A może nie…
