Zemfira (Земфира) is the stage name of Zemfira Talgatovna Ramazanova (Земфира Талгатовна Рамазанова), a Russian rock musician originally from Ufa, Bashkortostan. Zemfira has sold more than three million records over the course of her career, and continues to be popular in Russia and the former Soviet Republics.
Zemfira was influenced from an early age by rock bands like Black Sabbath, Nazareth, and Queen, as well as seminal Russian groups like Kino, Nautilus Pompilus, and Aquarium. As a child in Ufa she studied music, and eventually graduated with honors before entering the Ufa College of Fine Arts to study vocal performance. During her college years she performed frequently in bars and clubs around Ufa. After graduation, while working as a sound engineer, Zemfira began recording her own songs on her computer. Many of these would become some of her best-loved singles, including “Why” (“Почему”), “Snow” (“Снег”), and “Weatherman” (“Синоптик”).
Zemfira’s first professional performance took place in 1999 at a festival celebrating a local Ufa radio station. Shortly thereafter she sent out demo tapes to several Moscow producers, one of whom invited Zemfira and her band to Moscow to record.
This material would become Zemfira’s first, self-titled studio album. Prior to the album’s release, several singles saw heavy radio and television rotation, including “AIDS” (“СПИД”), “Arrivederci” (“Aриведерчи”), and “Rockets” (“Ракеты”).
Zemfira’s first major success came with her second full-length album, Forgive Me My Love (Прости меня моя любовь) the following year. Tracks like “Searching” (“Искала”) and “Ripe” (“Созрела”) became major hits, and the band was invited to headline the 2000 Maxidrom festival. This was following by a period of near-constant touring, and the release of a third album.
In 2004 Zemfira performed “We Are the Champions” alongside Queen at the MTV Russia awards. The following year she released a fourth studio album, Vendetta (Вендетта), which was very positively received. In 2008 Zemfira performed at Moscow’s Olympic Stadium, which was dubbed the best performance of her career and for which she won a Steppenwolf prize.
Zemfira continues to play shows and release music to this day, though she sparked some controversy in 2015 when she unfurled a Ukrainian flag at a concert in Tbilisi, Republic of Georgia. As a result of this, promoters dropped the band from several concerts.
