Yolka /

Published: October 31, 2016

Yolka (Ёлка in Russian) is a Ukrainian pop star, actress, and television personality who sings in Russian. Born Yelizaveta Valdemarivna Ivantsiv (Єлизавета Вальдемарівна Іванців), she received the nickname Ёлка (“fir tree”) when a childhood friend mispronounced her name; it amused her, and the name stuck. She has gained wide popularity and critical acclaim for her music in both Ukraine and Russia. She also reached many new audiences through her role as a judge in the Ukrainian version of The X Factor—a popular television singing competition—from 2010 to 2012.

Yolka’s musical education began at a young age—she sang in her school choir and in a Pioneers vocal group. She came from a highly musical family: her grandparents were also singers, and her mother was a trained musician. She eventually enrolled in a college for vocal training but quickly dropped out, citing difficulties with her instructors. Her first professional gig as a musician came shortly after, as a backing vocalist for a local band, B&B.

B&B dissolved in 2001 and Yolka attempted for a time to make a life for herself outside of music. However, a fellow musician and producer, Vlad Valov (Влад Валов), of the Moscow-based group Bad Balance—whom she had met while performing with B&B at the International Festival “Rap Music” in 2001—invited her to collaborate in Moscow. Thus began a longstanding collaborative relationship between Balov and Yolka , and the beginning of Yolka’s commercial success.

In 2005 Yolka released her debut album, City of Deception (Город Обмана), which was preceded by a chart-topping single by the same name the previous summer. The album was wildly successful and received glowing reviews in the press. Her second album largely followed this trend, but her third album received some critical backlash—it was derided for monotony and a repetition of her past motifs. However, Yolka regained her critical praise with Points Apart (Точки расставлены), which critic Alexei Mazhaev of media outlet Intermedia even gave a perfect score. The single from this album, “Provence” (“Прованс”), is largely considered the propulsive force behind Yolka’s superstardom.

For her efforts, Yolka has been recognized four times with one of Russia’s most prestigious musical awards, the Golden Gramophone. She has also won numerous other awards, including Singer of the Year at the ZD Awards in 2011, and three nominations the same year at the Muz-TV awards.

Her latest album, Skies (Небы), was released in 2015.

The video for “Provence” (“Прованс”):

Lyrics for “Прованс”:

A live version of her first hit single, “City of Deception” (“Город Обмана”):

Lyrics for “Город Обмана”:
