Valeriy Meladze /

Published: August 28, 2017

Valeriy Meladze (Russian: Валерий Меладзе, Georgian: ვალერი ძე მელაძე) is a singer and pianist, Honored Artist of the Russian Federation, and People’s Artist of the Chechen Republic. Born June 23, 1965 in Batumi, now the the second largest city in Georgia, Meladze was considered a disobedient child while his brother and songwriter, Konstantin (Russian: Константин, Georgian: კონსტანტინე), was very quiet.

Meladze performed poorly in school, but nonetheless studied piano during his primary education. Both his parents and grandparents were engineers, and he decided to enter the Nikolaev Shipbuilding Institute in Ukraine to study mechanical engineering.

Konstantin joined a band in April of 1985, in which Meladze occasionally performed as a back-up vocalist, but the group soon disbanded. In 1989 the brothers joined the successful Soviet group Dialog; from then until now Konstantin has written lyrics, music, and arrangements of all Valeriy’s songs.

Dialog fell from popularity in 1993 and the brothers left the group. They soon after met their future producer Evgeniy Friedland (Евгений Фридлянд), who helped record Meladze’s first hit, “Don’t Disturb My Soul, Violin” (“Не тревожь мне душу, скрипка”).

Meladze’s songs are often long and somber, causing many labels to avoid working with him. Nonetheless, legendary Soviet singer Alla Pugachova (Алла Пугачова) heard his demo record and invited Meladze to sing at the 1995 Christmas Meeting concert in Moscow. He was quickly awarded the 1995 Debut of the Year and Best Singer of the Year. In 1997, Meladze intended to perform at the Eurovision Song Contest with the song “Diva,” but withdrew after falling ill at the last minute.

Konstantin moved to Kiev in 1999 to work for the TV station Inter and spent less time writing music for his brother. Although many fans thought Meladze left the entertainment industry, he released his fourth studio album All Was This Way (Всё так и было) at the end of the year. Songs “Dream” (“Мечта”), “Daybreak” (“Рассветная”), and “Beautiful” (“Красиво”) topped the Russian charts.

In 2000, the brothers founded Russian-Ukrainian pop group VIA Gra (ВИА Гра). Valleriy often features in their songs, which, of course, Konstantin writes.

Meladze’s first hit, “Don’t Disturb My Soul, Violin” (“Не тревожь мне душу, скрипка”):

Lyrics for “Не тревожь мне душу, скрипка”:

The first (and only) duet performed by Konstantin and Valeriy, “My Brother” (“Мой брат”):

Lyrics for “Мой брат”:
