Yulia Savicheva at the MTV Russia Music Awards

Yulia Savicheva /

Published: April 14, 2016

Born into a family of musicians, Yulia Savicheva performed her first solo at age five. In 1994, her father’s band was invited to perform in Moscow, and she moved there from her native Kurgan, a city of about 350,000 in south-west Siberia. In Moscow, she studied ballet and theater for many years, helping her to land a lead a New Year’s play at Moscow’s famous Christ the Savior Cathedral in 2002. She made her national debut on the show Star Factory in 2003. Although she didn’t win or even place in the show’s competition, the exposure was enough to launch a long and varied solo career.

Savicheva released her first album Высоко (High) in 2004 and went on to represent Russia in various international singing competitions. She continued to release hits and her single “Привет” (“Hello”) was, at the time, one of the biggest radio hits in Russian radio chart history. In 2006, Yulia was named Performer of the Year at the MTV Russian Music Awards. Her newest album, Личное… (Personal…) features lyrical ballads written by her and her husband, Alexander Arshinov, a professional soccer player.

Savicheva also stared in the relatively unsuccessful film Первая любовь (First Love). She went on, however, to focus her acting career as a voice actor for children’s animated films. She has lent her voice to the Russian release of 20th Century Fox’s 2013 film Epic and the 2015 big-budget Russian animated feature Савва. (Savva. Heart of War), which is, as of 2016, being prepped for an English-language release as well.

Savicheva’s simple, heartfelt songs which often center on themes of freedom, love, and flight, as well as her versatile looks, which shift easily between girl-next-door and vixen, have captured the Russian pop market.

One of Savicheva’s early hits, “Если в сердце живет любовь,” (If Love Lives in the Heart) was used as the theme song for Russia’s version of “Ugly Betty.” Both were highly popular in Russia for some time.

Text for “Если в сердце живет любовь”

Her biggest hit on YouTube is “Я так тебя жду” (I Wait for You So)

Text for “Я так тебя жду”
